Why I Wrote PE With a Purpose
For nearly four decades, I have loved helping children learn martial arts and watching them discover their own strengths. A child learns a new skill, recognizes personal progress, and begins to carry themselves with greater confidence. Those moments have shown me that physical education can shape far more than physical ability.
Physical education is often treated as activity alone, yet children gain something deeper when movement includes clear instruction, feedback, and steady skill development. They learn how to focus, respond to guidance, work through challenge, and recognize their growing ability.
Over the years, I have watched children become calmer, more confident, and more willing to keep learning through consistent, skill-based practice. The difference is found in how the experience is taught. When skills are introduced step by step and progress becomes visible, children begin to understand that improvement is something they can build.
That understanding reaches beyond physical education. Confidence developed through progress can influence how children approach academics, responsibilities, relationships, and unfamiliar experiences. Focus strengthens. Persistence develops. Children experience the joy of becoming more capable.
That is why I wrote PE With a Purpose. The book offers parents and educators a clearer way to understand physical education as a foundational part of a child’s education. It explores how guided, skill-based practice supports physical development while strengthening the focus, confidence, and habits that support learning.
PE With a Purpose is now available. In this space, I will continue sharing practical ideas about skill-based physical education and what it can make possible for children.
