Online Karate Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do we sign up for a free trial class?

You can reserve your free 30-minute private lesson by filling out our request form. It’s a great way for your child to meet an instructor and learn the basics.

What is the cost after the trial?

Our membership is a simple, flat rate of $79 per month for unlimited classes. We also offer a 50% discount for the first month, and family discounts for siblings.

Are there any contracts?

No. Our membership is month-to-month, and you can cancel at any time without any hassle or long-term commitment.

About the Classes

How can karate be taught effectively online?

Our classes are live and interactive, not pre-recorded. Instructors teach in real time and provide personalized feedback throughout each class. The curriculum is intentionally designed for online instruction, ensuring students make meaningful progress.

Isn’t this just more “screen time”?

We call it “good screen time.” Unlike passive video games, our classes are an active, engaging experience that builds physical fitness, mental focus, and social connections.

How much space do we need?

A small, open area is all that’s needed—about enough room for your child to safely move, step, kick, and extend their arms without obstacles. Many families use a cleared section of a living room or bedroom.

Who are the instructors?

Our instructors are expert martial artists and experienced educators. They are passionate about teaching children and undergo formal background checks to ensure a safe environment for all students.

Does my child need a uniform?

Kids love to wear their karate uniform to class! But they do not need a uniform to attend the free trial class. When ready, there is a large selection of uniforms on Amazon.

How do students earn belt promotions?

Students test during the final week of each month through our positive Celebration Tests. Each child is individually highlighted to demonstrate techniques in a supportive, confidence-building setting. Families purchase belts from Amazon.

How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?

Most students earn their Black Belt in about five to six years. This allows for steady, age-appropriate progress that supports long-term growth and maturity.

For Parents

Is this a good PE option for homeschoolers?

Yes! Many of our families are homeschoolers who use our program to fulfill PE requirements. It provides structured physical education that also teaches valuable life skills.

My child is shy, learns differently, or has a lot of energy. Will this work for them?

Yes. At Great Start Karate, we meet kids where they are. Our instructors provide a patient, supportive environment with clear structure and encouragement, giving every child the space to grow in confidence, focus, and self-belief at their own pace.

What positive changes do parents notice at home?

Parents often notice improved listening, focus, and follow-through, along with greater respect and responsibility at home. Many also see increased confidence and self-control during schoolwork and daily routines.
